Batumi
On The Black Sea
Slow down by the coast, walk the boulevard, and experience a different side of Georgia.
Batumi at
a Glance
A coastal stop changes the rhythm of a Georgia trip. Here are the details worth knowing before you add Batumi to your route.
Batumi Boulevard, the Alphabet Tower, Ali and Nino and the Black Sea are among its defining sights.
The warmest period for a proper coastal stop and swimming-focused visit.
Batumi's beach is pebble rather than sand, so proper footwear is worth packing.
10-day route
Batumi is the longest single stop on the full route.
Batumi can be added as a paid coastal extension to a private 5-day or 7-day booking.
After mountain roads, wine tastings and church visits, Batumi gives the itinerary a noticeably slower pace.
A Slower Chapter
in Your Georgia Journey
After mountains, wine country and long scenic drives, Batumi changes the pace. It is the point in the journey where you can settle in, walk by the sea and give the itinerary room to breathe.
Batumi arrives when the journey needs a change of pace.
On the 10-day Georgia itinerary, Batumi comes after Borjomi, with an optional stop in Kutaisi along the way, and is followed by the long return drive to Tbilisi.
It is deliberately the longest stop on the route. After five destinations of mountain driving, wine tastings and church visits, the coast gives you time to slow down and experience Georgia differently.
The coast can still be part of your private trip.
Batumi is not included by default on the 5-day or 7-day route. On a private booking, however, it can be added as a paid coastal extension. Mention it when you enquire and the team can build it into your route.
Ask About Adding Batumi →Six Ways to Experience Batumi
Batumi is more than a seaside stop. Its boulevard, modern landmarks, old squares, green spaces and mountain views give you several very different ways to spend your time here.
Batumi Boulevard
A roughly 7km seafront promenade dating to 1881, with historic alleys, a bike path and more than 40,000 trees and plants. It is the natural spine of the city, with many of Batumi's best-known sights sitting on or just off it.
02
Ali and Nino
Two 8-metre moving metal figures that slowly approach, merge and separate. The sculpture repeats its movement every ten minutes and stands directly along Batumi's coastline.
03
Alphabet Tower
A 130-metre landmark designed around a DNA-helix spiral, with the Georgian alphabet incorporated into its structure. A rotating observation area near the top gives wide views across the city and Black Sea.
04
Europe Square & Batumi Piazza
Europe Square centres on the Medea statue holding the Golden Fleece, surrounded by restaurants, shops and a dancing fountain. Nearby, Batumi Piazza brings an Italian-style square, mosaic and clock tower into the old city.
05
Batumi Botanical Garden
Around 9km north of the city, this 110-hectare garden brings together roughly 5,000 plant species from multiple climate zones. Give it time rather than treating it as a quick stop.
06
Argo Cable Car
The cable car climbs from Batumi towards Anuria Mountain, opening up panoramic views over the skyline, coastline and surrounding hills. At the top, the complex combines views, culture, music and places to sit and take in the landscape.
From a seven-kilometre seafront walk to mountain panoramas above the skyline, Batumi rewards you for giving it more than a quick stop.
The Beach Is Part of the Batumi Experience
Think pebbles, not soft sand.
Batumi's beach runs along much of the Boulevard, giving the city a long, open stretch of Black Sea coastline to walk, sit beside and enjoy.
The shoreline is pebble rather than sand, so proper beach footwear is worth packing. It changes the experience slightly, but the coast itself remains one of the defining parts of a Batumi stay.
The sea is at its warmest around this period, making it the most practical window for a proper swim.
A coast made for slowing down.
The Boulevard, sea, cafés and open coastline give you space to walk, sit by the water or simply leave part of the day unplanned.
Add Beach Time →Two Very Different Ways to Go Further
Give yourself an extra half-day and Batumi can lead you in two completely different directions: one into Georgia's ancient history, the other into the dense green landscapes beyond the coast.
Gonio Fortress
Built by the Romans in the 1st century AD, Gonio Fortress is one of Georgia's oldest fortifications. Its surviving walls and towers give you a strong sense of the layers of history along this stretch of the Black Sea coast.
The fortress is also linked with the story of the Argonauts, while local traditions connect the site with the burial of the Apostle Matthias.
Mtirala National Park
Inland from the coast, Mtirala brings a completely different atmosphere: dense Colchian forest, hiking trails, waterfalls and the kind of greenery that makes you forget you were walking along the Black Sea only a short while earlier.
It is a natural choice when you want to trade city streets for forest trails and a more active half-day outside Batumi.
These are add-on experiences, not standard sightseeing stops.
Gonio Fortress and Mtirala National Park are arranged locally rather than included in the standard Roaming Legs sightseeing plan. Mention them when planning your Batumi stay if you want either excursion added.
Ask About These Excursions →The City Changes After Sunset
Once the sun drops into the Black Sea, Batumi takes on a more polished, energetic character. Illuminated architecture, the boulevard, restaurants, bars and the city's casino scene create a very different atmosphere from its daytime coastline.
Modern, glossy and full of movement.
Batumi's illuminated skyline gives the waterfront a distinctly modern-resort feel after dark. The Boulevard remains a natural place to walk, while restaurants, bars and evening entertainment add another layer to the city.
The city is also known regionally for its casino resorts, attracting visitors from Turkey and other nearby markets. It is part of Batumi's character, although it is not something Roaming Legs arranges or builds the itinerary around.
A different atmosphere along the Black Sea after sunset.
Spend the evening around Batumi's lively central areas.
A recognised part of the city's modern resort character.
You do not need a late night to enjoy Batumi after dark.
A simple evening walk along the waterfront can be enough. Sit down for dinner, watch the city lights reflect across the Black Sea, or explore the newer parts of Batumi at your own pace.
Plan Your Batumi Evenings →Casinos are part of Batumi's wider nightlife landscape, but they are not included in the Roaming Legs itinerary and are not activities arranged by the team.
Batumi Fits Differently Into Different Trips
The answer depends on the route you are taking and how much time you want to give the coast. On the full 10-day itinerary, Batumi is already built in. On a shorter private journey, it can be added when you specifically want time by the Black Sea.
10-Day Georgia Itinerary
Batumi comes after Borjomi, with an optional stop in Kutaisi along the way, before the return journey to Tbilisi. The longer stay gives the trip room for the boulevard, beach and slower coastal pace.
5-Day / 7-Day Route
Batumi is not included by default on either shorter itinerary. For a private booking, however, you can ask the team to add it as a paid coastal extension and build it into your route.
Ask About Adding Batumi →Your travel style matters too.
Couples
Batumi suits travellers looking for a slower, more relaxed pace alongside the coast, with evening walks, restaurants and time around the Boulevard.
Slower-Pace Travellers
The longer Batumi stay creates a break from repeated driving and sightseeing, giving you more unstructured coastal time.
Families
Batumi is not part of the standard family route, but the Boulevard and Botanical Garden can work well when beach time matters to your trip.
Mountains first. Coast when you want to slow down.
Batumi brings a different rhythm to a Georgia journey. Whether it is already part of the 10-day route or added to a private shorter trip, the coastal stop gives you time to walk, relax and experience another side of the country.
Plan My Georgia Trip →A Few Things Worth Knowing Before Batumi
A little planning makes the coastal stop easier. Keep these three details in mind when you build Batumi into your Georgia itinerary.
Bring proper beach footwear.
Batumi's beach is pebble rather than sand. Pack shoes or thick-soled sandals instead of planning to walk the shoreline barefoot.
Some experiences are arranged locally.
The Argo cable car, Botanical Garden entry, boat trips and Gonio Fortress or Mtirala excursions are not part of the standard package.
The return journey is part of the planning.
The standard itinerary drives back from Batumi to Tbilisi, around 5 hours 40 minutes via Kutaisi. A domestic flight is not a standing option and depends on availability for your dates.
If you would rather fly back instead of taking the road journey, ask the Roaming Legs team when you book. Flight availability depends on your travel dates.
Choose Your Route, Then Place the Coast

Batumi, Answered
A few practical answers before you decide how Batumi fits into your Georgia journey.
The details that matter before you go.
From the beach and swimming season to route options and the return journey, here are the answers most useful when planning Batumi.
01 Is Batumi worth visiting? +
Yes — it is a genuinely different leg of a Georgia trip: a seafront boulevard, a beach, and a slower pace after the mountains and wine country. It is the longest stop on our 10-day route for exactly that reason.
02 How far is Batumi from Tbilisi? +
Roughly 370–380km by road, about 5.5 to 6 hours by private vehicle, or around an hour by domestic flight.
03 Is Batumi beach sand or pebble? +
Pebble, not sand — worth knowing before you pack. The sea is comfortably swimmable roughly from July to mid-September.
04 Can I add Batumi to a shorter Georgia itinerary? +
Yes — on a private booking, Batumi can be added as a paid extension to the 5-day or 7-day route. It is not included by default on either, so mention it when you enquire.
05 Is Batumi family-friendly? +
The Boulevard, beach, and Botanical Garden suit families well in general. It is not one of the three stops on our default family package (Tbilisi, Kazbegi, Borjomi), but it can be added if beach time matters to your trip — ask our team.
06 Does Batumi have a nightlife or casino scene? +
Yes — Batumi is regionally known for its casino resorts, drawing visitors from Turkey and beyond. It is not something Roaming Legs arranges or builds the itinerary around, but it is part of the city's character.
07 What is the best time to visit Batumi? +
July through mid-September for swimming and the warmest weather. Outside that window, it is a quieter, scenic stop rather than a beach one — see our best time to visit Georgia guide for the full picture.
