THE JOURNEY NORTH

Where Gudauri Fits in a Georgia Trip

Gudauri is not usually anyone's single reason to visit Georgia. It is the mountain stop that makes the drive to Kazbegi worthwhile, giving you time to slow down as the Georgian Military Highway climbs into the Caucasus.

Georgian Military Highway · Gudauri

From Tbilisi to the Caucasus

The road north from Tbilisi runs along the Georgian Military Highway, passing Ananuri Fortress and the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir before climbing into the higher Caucasus landscape.

Gudauri is the mountain-resort stop along this climb. The landscape changes noticeably here, with higher elevations, broad mountain views and the open slopes around the resort.

From Gudauri, the road continues north towards Kazbegi, also known as Stepantsminda. The continuation takes roughly another 30–40 minutes in normal driving conditions, with Gergeti Trinity Church becoming one of the major landmarks further north.

On Roaming Legs itineraries, Gudauri therefore works as a proper overnight stop between Tbilisi and Kazbegi, rather than simply a quick roadside photo stop.

WINTER IN GUDAURI

Skiing in Gudauri

Gudauri is Georgia's best-known ski resort, sitting high above the Georgian Military Highway with open Caucasus terrain, marked runs across different difficulty levels and lifts reaching well above 3,000 metres.

Gudauri Ski Resort

Gudauri has marked terrain covering beginner, intermediate, professional and very difficult categories. The resort uses the European slope classification system, making it easier to understand the kind of terrain available before you set out.

The ski area rises from around 1,989 metres in its lower section to about 3,276 metres at the highest lift-accessed point. The high, open setting gives the skiing a distinctly alpine feel, with broad views across the surrounding Caucasus Mountains.

The usual ski season runs from December through around mid-April, although exact snow conditions vary during the season. February and March are generally among the busiest months.

For experienced skiers, Gudauri also has freeride and backcountry terrain, while Snow Park areas provide options for freestyle riders. Ski and snowboard instruction can be arranged locally.

What Skiing Here Feels Like

Gudauri's terrain is high and open, with wide mountain views and relatively little tree cover across the ski area. The setting makes the mountain part of the experience, not simply the backdrop.

01

Beginner Terrain

Green-marked areas are available for beginners, including teaching terrain at higher elevations.

02

Intermediate Runs

Blue-marked terrain provides options for skiers who have already developed basic mountain skills.

03

Advanced Terrain

Red and black runs provide steeper terrain for experienced skiers looking for more challenge.

04

Freeride & Snow Park

Experienced riders can look beyond marked runs, while Snow Park terrain adds a freestyle option.

Planning note: Lift tickets and ski or snowboard rental are not included in the Georgia package. These are arranged locally in Gudauri, so budget for them separately. Ski lessons and other mountain activities can also be arranged locally.

SUMMER & SHOULDER SEASON

Summer & Shoulder Season: Paragliding and the Friendship Monument

Outside the ski season, Gudauri becomes a quieter mountain stop. The focus shifts from snow and ski runs to the Friendship Monument, wide Caucasus views and tandem paragliding from the mountain slopes.

Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument

Outside ski season, Gudauri is a much quieter stop, and much of the sightseeing centres around the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument. Built in 1983, the circular viewing platform stands above the valley and is decorated with a large colourful mosaic.

The monument sits on the Georgian Military Highway between Gudauri and the Jvari Pass. From the viewing platform, the surrounding Caucasus landscape opens out across the valley, making it one of the notable viewpoints on the road north.

The same area is also used as a paragliding launch point. Tandem flights can take off near the monument, with the flight descending into the valley below. The Panorama launch point is at approximately 2,245 metres.

Summer through early autumn is the most suitable period for this experience, although flights remain dependent on weather and local operating conditions.

What You Can Do Outside Winter

Summer Gudauri is less about ticking off a long attraction list and more about spending time above the highway, taking in the landscape and choosing an activity that suits your pace.

01

Friendship Monument

Walk onto the circular viewing platform and take in the mountain valleys from the edge of the Military Highway.

02

Tandem Paragliding

Fly with a tandem pilot from the Panorama launch area, subject to weather and local operating conditions.

03

Mountain Views

The warmer months open up broad views across the Caucasus and the valleys below Gudauri.

04

A Quieter Stop

With the main ski season over, Gudauri can work as a slower overnight stop before continuing towards Kazbegi.

Paragliding note: Tandem flights are arranged locally rather than pre-booked as part of the Roaming Legs package. Flight availability depends on weather and the operator's conditions on the day.

ON THE WAY TO GUDAURI

On the Way: Ananuri Fortress

If your journey to Gudauri starts in Tbilisi, Ananuri makes an excellent first mountain-country stop. The fortress sits above the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir, directly along the Georgian Military Highway towards the high Caucasus.

Ananuri Fortress · Zhinvali Reservoir

Ananuri is a historic fortified complex on the route north from Tbilisi. Its buildings span several centuries, and the fortress remains one of the best preserved historical landmarks along this stretch of the Georgian Military Highway.

The setting is a big part of the attraction. The fortress stands beside the turquoise waters of the Zhinvali Reservoir, with the Aragvi River valley and surrounding mountains forming the backdrop.

The complex includes defensive walls and towers, churches and other historic structures. The main church dates to 1689, giving the stop considerably more substance than a quick roadside viewpoint.

On a Tbilisi-to-Gudauri drive, it fits naturally into the route. There is no separate major detour required, so you can explore the fortress and reservoir before continuing higher into the mountains.

Why Ananuri Works on This Route

It combines history, architecture and a striking waterside landscape without taking you far away from the road you are already travelling.

01

Historic Fortress

The complex includes upper and lower fortifications, defensive towers, churches and historic structures.

02

Zhinvali Reservoir

The fortress overlooks the reservoir, creating one of the most distinctive landscape views on this part of the highway.

03

Easy Route Stop

The fortress is already on the northbound road, so visiting it does not require a separate major detour from the journey.

04

A Natural Break

Spending 45 minutes to an hour here gives you time to stretch, explore and continue towards Gudauri without turning the day into a rushed drive.

On Roaming Legs itineraries: Ananuri is already part of the drive towards Gudauri from Tbilisi, so there is no separate excursion to arrange. It works naturally as an early stop before the road climbs deeper into the Caucasus.

Plan the Tbilisi–Ananuri–Gudauri route around your travel dates.

STAYING IN GUDAURI

Is Gudauri Worth an Overnight Stop?

On a northbound Georgia itinerary, an overnight in Gudauri gives you more than a break from the road. It gives you time to experience the mountain setting instead of arriving in Kazbegi after a rushed driving day.

Mountain Stay · Gudauri

On Roaming Legs' itineraries, Gudauri gets a full night rather than being treated as a quick driving-day stop. That gives you enough time to see the Friendship Monument, take in the mountain viewpoints and, in the warmer months, consider paragliding.

In winter, staying overnight also means you can start towards the ski slopes without turning skiing into an exhausting add-on to a long transfer day.

Gudauri has a proper tourism infrastructure with hotels, apartments, restaurants and mountain cafés, so it works as a genuine mountain stay rather than simply a roadside viewpoint.

The overnight also fits naturally with the next morning's drive to Kazbegi. Stepantsminda lies farther north along the same road, making the following leg considerably shorter than the original Tbilisi-to-Gudauri drive.

When you are building your own route and have very limited time, a few hours around the Friendship Monument and viewpoint can still work. You would simply be giving up the opportunity to ski, paraglide or experience Gudauri at a slower pace.

1 night

Roaming Legs itinerary rhythm: arrive in Gudauri, spend the evening in the mountains, then continue north towards Kazbegi the next day.

What the Overnight Gives You

The extra night is less about adding another checklist destination and more about giving the mountain section of your Georgia trip enough time.

01

See the Monument Properly

You are not limited to a quick roadside photograph. You can spend time at the Friendship Monument and its mountain viewpoint.

02

Fit in Paragliding

In suitable summer or early-autumn weather, the extra time leaves room to arrange a tandem flight locally.

03

Make Winter Skiing Practical

An overnight allows an earlier start for the slopes, instead of trying to combine skiing with a full northbound transfer day.

04

Keep Kazbegi Unhurried

With Gudauri handled the previous evening, the next morning can continue towards Kazbegi without compressing both mountain stops into one day.

Short on time? A few hours can be enough for the Friendship Monument and the main viewpoint. What you lose is the time needed for skiing, paragliding or simply enjoying the mountain resort at a slower pace.

Customize your mountain stay and onward journey to Kazbegi.

BEFORE YOU GO

Practical Notes Before You Go

Gudauri is high, exposed and noticeably different from Tbilisi. A little planning matters here, particularly when you are visiting outside the main summer months or travelling along the mountain road in winter.

Jvari Cross Pass on the Georgian Military Road between Gudauri and Stepantsminda
Jvari Pass · Georgian Military Highway

Even outside ski season, Gudauri sits considerably higher than Tbilisi, so temperatures can feel much colder. Layers are useful regardless of when you travel, particularly in the morning and evening.

Activities such as ski or snowboard rental, lift tickets and paragliding are arranged locally rather than included in the Georgia package. Keep a separate budget for these extras and confirm availability when you arrive.

Winter is the section of the journey that needs the most flexibility. Snow, visibility and mountain conditions can affect the road over the Jvari Pass, so check the route before setting out and allow extra time.

01

Altitude & Cold

Gudauri is at 2,196m, so pack layers even when Tbilisi feels mild.

02

Activities Locally

Rental, lift tickets and paragliding are handled locally and budgeted separately.

03

Check Conditions

Winter road conditions can change quickly, especially around the high pass.

WINTER DRIVING

Give the Mountain Road Some Respect

The Georgian Military Highway remains the natural connection between Gudauri and Kazbegi, but the high-altitude section is weather-sensitive. Plan around the road, rather than assuming every winter day will run on an exact schedule.

01

Snow & Visibility

Heavy snow or poor visibility can affect the final high-mountain stretch, so conditions should be checked before departure.

02

Temporary Restrictions

Sections of the route can be temporarily restricted during severe winter conditions and avalanche-control operations.

03

Allow Extra Time

Build some flexibility into your transfer rather than planning the journey to a minute.

04

Ask Before Booking

For winter dates, ask about current road conditions, expected weather and the planned vehicle before confirming your travel dates.

Roaming Legs planning note: practical conditions matter more here than a rigid schedule. The itinerary can be planned around the expected road, weather and activity conditions, while optional mountain activities remain locally arranged.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently Asked Questions

Planning the Gudauri section of a Georgia trip usually comes down to a few practical questions: when to go, what to do once you arrive, whether to stay overnight and how the mountain road fits into the journey north.

How far is Gudauri from Tbilisi?

Gudauri is about 120km from Tbilisi. By road, the journey typically takes around 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic and mountain-road conditions.

Is Gudauri worth visiting if I am not skiing?

Yes. Outside the ski season, the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument and its viewpoint are the main draws, while summer and early autumn also offer tandem paragliding. Gudauri is also a natural overnight stop on the road to Kazbegi.

Is skiing in Gudauri good for beginners?

Gudauri has marked terrain across beginner, intermediate, advanced and very difficult categories. Professional instructors and ski schools are available locally for travellers who want lessons.

Can I go paragliding in Gudauri?

Yes. Tandem paragliding is available from launch points around Gudauri, including the Panorama area near the Friendship Monument. Georgia Travel lists the Panorama take-off at about 2,245m, with flights typically lasting around 20 to 25 minutes. The activity is weather-dependent and arranged locally.

Do I stay overnight in Gudauri, or just pass through?

On Roaming Legs' itineraries, Gudauri gets a full night before the journey continues towards Kazbegi. This gives you more time for the Friendship Monument, mountain views and, in the appropriate season, skiing or paragliding.

What is the difference between Gudauri and Kazbegi?

Gudauri is the mountain-resort and ski-town stop on the Georgian Military Highway. Kazbegi, also called Stepantsminda, lies farther north and is closely associated with Gergeti Trinity Church and Mount Kazbek. The two destinations are connected by the same mountain road.

Is the road to Gudauri safe to drive in winter?

The route is maintained and normally remains usable, but the high-mountain section can be affected by heavy snow, poor visibility and temporary restrictions. Before travelling in winter, check current road conditions and allow some flexibility in your schedule.

What should I pack for Gudauri?

Pack layers rather than relying only on the temperature in Tbilisi. Gudauri sits at a much higher elevation, and mornings and evenings can feel noticeably colder even outside the ski season. Winter travellers should prepare specifically for snow and mountain conditions.

PARAGLIDING

Panorama flights are weather-dependent and typically last around 20–25 minutes with a certified tandem pilot.

WINTER ROAD

Check mountain-road conditions before travelling and leave room for weather-related changes to the schedule.
