When Is the Best Time
to Visit Georgia?

There isn't one single best month for Georgia — it depends on what you're prioritising. September and October provide a reliable mix of comfortable weather, wine harvests and fewer crowds.

But if you're travelling for skiing, mountain hiking, Batumi's Black Sea coast or a quieter holiday, another season may suit you better. Here's how to choose.

The Best All-Round Time to Visit

For most travellers, September and October offer Georgia's most balanced experience. The intense summer heat begins to ease, nights become cooler, and popular sightseeing routes feel less crowded.

This is also Kakheti's wine-harvest season, known as Rtveli. It is especially rewarding for travellers who want a combination of Tbilisi sightseeing, countryside experiences, local food and wine.

Summer offers longer daylight hours and generally the most favourable access to Georgia's high-altitude landscapes. This is the main season for exploring mountain scenery around Kazbegi and beyond.

While Tbilisi can become very hot in July and August, the mountain regions are noticeably cooler. Snow conditions and weather can still affect individual trails, especially early in the season.

Georgia's winter season centres on mountain destinations such as Gudauri. Skiing typically begins around late December, with February and March among the most popular months.

Georgia by Season

Four seasons. Four very different ways to experience Georgia.

Georgia's landscape changes dramatically throughout the year. Spring brings green valleys, summer opens the high mountains, autumn fills the vineyards with activity, and winter transforms the Caucasus into a skiing destination.

Here's what each season actually means for your weather, activities and travel planning.

Spring in Georgia

Greener landscapes, blooming countryside and pleasant sightseeing weather — with a good chance of rain.

Georgia gradually wakes up from winter between March and May. March can still feel chilly and unpredictable, especially in mountainous areas. By April and May, temperatures become noticeably milder, making it a comfortable time to explore cities and countryside.

Spring also brings some of Georgia's greenest landscapes. Wildflowers begin appearing, trees regain their leaves and countryside scenery becomes especially appealing. However, this is not necessarily a dry season. Tbilisi typically receives some of its heaviest rainfall in May and June.

Spring is a good choice for visitors who prefer sightseeing without intense summer heat. If you're planning remote mountain hikes, remember that higher trails may still have snow or variable conditions.

Summer in Georgia

Long mountain days, Black Sea swimming and Georgia's busiest travel season.

June through August is Georgia's peak tourism season. Popular destinations become busier, hotel demand rises, and temperatures can climb sharply in the cities.

Tbilisi's average July high is around 32°C, and some summer heatwaves bring temperatures into the high 30s. This is worth considering if your itinerary involves long days of walking and sightseeing.

The advantage of summer is access to Georgia's mountains. The high-altitude hiking season is at its strongest, with clearer mountain routes and longer daylight hours. Meanwhile, Batumi and the Black Sea coast offer opportunities for seaside experiences, with July through September generally the main swimming period.

If you're travelling in July or August, plan popular stays in advance and consider balancing hot city sightseeing with cooler mountain destinations.

September and October are the months we recommend by default for travellers who want a balanced Georgia holiday. Summer heat begins to ease, evenings become cooler, and visitor numbers usually fall after the August peak.

One of autumn's highlights is Rtveli, Georgia's traditional grape-harvest season. In Kakheti, vineyards and wineries become particularly active as the harvest gets underway. Exact harvest timing varies with the weather and grape varieties.

Autumn also brings changing colours across mountain valleys and the possibility of experiencing Tbilisoba, Tbilisi's annual city celebration. Festival dates should be checked for your particular travel year.

For first-time travellers combining Tbilisi, Kakheti and scenic drives, September and October are excellent months to consider.

Winter in Georgia

Snow-covered mountain scenery, skiing in Gudauri and quieter city experiences.

Winter creates two different travel experiences across Georgia. Cities such as Tbilisi become cold but usually remain manageable for sightseeing with suitable winter clothing.

The mountains are a different story. Gudauri becomes a skiing and snowboarding destination, with ski operations typically running from late December into April, depending on snow conditions. February and March are often particularly popular.

Outside busy ski areas and holiday dates, winter can also be one of the quieter and more affordable periods for travelling in Georgia. Batumi becomes considerably wetter and quieter during this season, so it is less suited to a traditional beach holiday.

If your itinerary includes Kazbegi or Gudauri, mountain-road conditions are important. Snowfall and avalanche risks can lead to temporary restrictions along parts of the Georgian Military Highway.

JANUARY — DECEMBER

What Changes Each Month?

A practical guide to Georgia's weather and seasonal highlights.

01 WINTER

January

Snow & Skiing

WEATHER Cold; Tbilisi approximately 0–7°C. Snow in the mountains.

The winter ski season is in full swing around Gudauri. Snow-covered mountain landscapes are the main attraction, while lower-altitude cities are generally quieter and can offer better value.

02 WINTER

February

Peak Ski Season

WEATHER Similar to January, with cold city weather and mountain snow.

February is one of the busiest ski months at Gudauri, alongside March. Travellers who want winter sports should check resort conditions and book popular mountain accommodation in advance.

03 WINTER / SPRING

March

Changing Seasons

WEATHER Transitional and unpredictable; snow can remain in mountain areas.

The ski season continues at Gudauri, while lower-altitude destinations gradually begin moving towards spring. Shoulder-season accommodation prices may start appearing away from the busiest mountain resorts.

04 SPRING

April

Spring Sightseeing

WEATHER Warming temperatures, with occasional rainy days.

April is a pleasant early sightseeing window for destinations such as Tbilisi. Wildflowers begin appearing, greenery returns to the countryside, and walking around the cities becomes more comfortable than during summer.

05 SPRING

May

Green Countryside

WEATHER Generally milder, often above 10°C, with frequent rain.

May brings some of Georgia's lushest scenery. It is also among the wetter months in Tbilisi, so a light waterproof jacket and flexible outdoor plans are sensible. The countryside is particularly green.

06 SUMMER

June

Mountain Travel Begins

WEATHER Hotter in cities, generally improving conditions in mountain areas.

Georgia's main summer travel season begins. High-altitude hiking routes gradually become accessible as snow clears, although some higher passes may still be affected early in the month.

07 PEAK SUMMER

July

Mountains & Beach Holidays

WEATHER Tbilisi average July high around 32°C, occasionally much hotter.

July brings peak crowds and some of the highest seasonal prices. It is an excellent month for high-altitude mountain experiences and the beginning of the main swimming period along Batumi's Black Sea coast.

08 PEAK SUMMER

August

Late-Summer Adventures

WEATHER Similar to July, with hot cities and a relatively dry inland period.

Peak tourism continues across Georgia. Mountain routes remain popular, Batumi is lively, and grapes begin ripening ahead of the harvest season. Advance planning is useful for popular destinations and stays.

11 LOW SEASON

November

Quieter Travel

WEATHER Colder conditions arrive; Batumi becomes very wet.

The lower-demand travel season begins in much of Georgia. Popular city destinations can become quieter, while snow starts affecting some mountain routes. Batumi is less suited to beach-focused holidays.

12 WINTER

December

Winter Arrives

WEATHER Cold city weather, with snow in mountain regions.

Georgia moves into its winter season. Gudauri skiing often begins around late December, depending on snowfall and resort conditions. Cities remain comparatively quiet ahead of the New Year celebrations.

GEORGIA'S BLACK SEA COAST

Best Time to Visit Batumi, Georgia

A different side of Georgia, shaped by the sea and seasons.

Batumi offers something quite different from Georgia's mountain towns and historic cities. Set beside the Black Sea, it is known for its long seaside boulevard, pebble beaches, coastal atmosphere and subtropical greenery.

If swimming and relaxing by the coast are part of your plans, July through September is the main period to consider. Other months suit sightseeing and quieter walks, but the weather can be considerably wetter.

THE BEST COASTAL WINDOW

July to September

Warm sea temperatures, beach days and a lively coastal atmosphere.

For most beach-focused visitors, July and August bring the warmest and busiest part of Batumi's summer season. This is when beach facilities, waterside cafes and seaside activities are most active.

September can be an appealing alternative. The sea often remains warm enough for swimming while the busiest summer holiday crowds start to ease. Actual weather conditions still vary from year to year.

01 / BEACH SEASON

Summer on the Black Sea

Batumi's beaches are largely pebbled rather than sandy, making beach shoes useful. During summer, the waterfront becomes a gathering place for swimmers, families and visitors enjoying the coastal atmosphere.

July and August are particularly lively, although they also bring more visitors and higher demand for accommodation. If your itinerary includes several beach days, allow some flexibility for changing sea conditions.

02 / CITY & COAST

Batumi Beyond the Beach

You don't have to visit Batumi exclusively for swimming. Its long seaside boulevard, walking areas, urban architecture and local food scene make the city interesting beyond the main beach season.

May, June and October can suit sightseeing and relaxed coastal walks. The advantage is a quieter atmosphere, although the sea may be too cool for comfortable swimming.

PLAN FOR THE CONDITIONS

How Batumi Changes Through the Year

Batumi has a humid coastal climate. Rain is possible throughout the year, so the best visiting period depends on whether you want beach time or simply to explore the city.

01

Spring

March – May

Increasingly mild weather, green landscapes and quieter streets. Better for exploring than swimming.

02

Summer

June – August

Warm coastal weather, busy beaches and the main holiday season. July and August are particularly popular.

03

Autumn

September – November

September can still offer pleasant sea temperatures. Rain generally becomes a greater planning factor later in autumn.

04

Winter

December – February

A quieter, wetter season with fewer beach visitors. Better suited to relaxed city travel than swimming.

WINTER TRAVEL IN THE CAUCASUS

Winter Travel & Mountain Road Safety

What to know before visiting Kazbegi or Gudauri in winter.

Snow-covered mountain scenery is one of Georgia's winter highlights. But if your trip includes Kazbegi or Gudauri, the road connecting these destinations deserves special attention.

The Georgian Military Highway operates through winter, but mountain conditions can change quickly. Heavy snow, ice and avalanche risk may cause temporary road restrictions.

Authentic photograph of the Georgian Military Highway crossing the Caucasus mountains
THE GEORGIAN MILITARY HIGHWAY The route connecting Tbilisi with Georgia's northern mountains.
UNDERSTANDING THE ROUTE

The Road to Kazbegi Is Part of the Experience.

The mountain scenery is remarkable, but travelling this route in winter requires more flexibility than a summer journey.

The Georgian Military Highway connects Tbilisi with Gudauri and Stepantsminda, commonly known as Kazbegi. It crosses the high Caucasus through the Jvari Pass region.

The Gudauri–Kobi section is especially exposed to winter weather. Snowfall, strong winds and avalanche danger can lead to temporary traffic restrictions.

The route is maintained during winter, but that does not mean every section is accessible at every hour. Restrictions may affect different vehicle categories differently, and conditions can change within the same day.

If your itinerary includes this mountain route between December and March, it's sensible to confirm road conditions close to your travel date.

Four Things Worth Planning Ahead

01

Check Road Restrictions

Check official road announcements before travelling and again on your departure day. Conditions can change at short notice.

02

Use Suitable Winter Transport

Choose appropriately equipped vehicles and experienced drivers familiar with local winter conditions. Follow current tyre, chain and road-access requirements.

03

Keep Your Schedule Flexible

Avoid relying on a tight mountain-to-airport connection. Allow room for possible delays or changes in plans.

04

Confirm Your Itinerary

Ask your travel planner how temporary restrictions would affect your specific route and dates before booking non-refundable arrangements.

GEORGIA TRIP PLANNING · SEASONAL COSTS

Does the Season Affect Your Package Price?

The month you travel can influence the cost of your Georgia holiday — even when the itinerary stays the same.

Hotel demand, popular travel dates, mountain resort availability and local transport arrangements can all influence the price of a Georgia travel package.

A summer trip to Batumi may have a different cost profile from an autumn journey through Kakheti or a winter holiday that includes Gudauri.

That's why the most useful package comparison starts with your actual travel month, preferred destinations and accommodation requirements.

01 / THE BIG PICTURE

Same country.
Different season.
Different demand.

There isn't one single "cheap month" for every type of Georgia holiday.

The best-value dates for exploring Tbilisi may not be the cheapest dates for a ski holiday in Gudauri. What matters is where you want to go and what you want to experience.

02 / SEASONAL PRICE PATTERNS

What Happens to Travel Costs Throughout the Year?

These are typical demand patterns, not fixed Roaming Legs rates. Your final quotation depends on actual availability and the services selected.

Travel Period Demand Pattern What May Affect Cost Planning Advice
JUNE – AUGUST Summer Peak Higher demand Beach-season hotels in Batumi and popular mountain stays may cost more. Book popular destinations early, particularly for July and August.
SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER Autumn Shoulder Season Often balanced Demand can ease after summer, although wine harvest dates and popular events may affect selected hotels. Compare dates around festivals and vineyard experiences.
NOVEMBER – MARCH Quieter City Travel Often lower inland Tbilisi and other non-ski destinations may offer better hotel value outside major holidays. Consider a city-focused itinerary if skiing isn't your priority.
LATE DECEMBER – MARCH Winter Ski Season Higher in ski resorts Gudauri accommodation and ski-related services may be in greater demand during the active season. Confirm resort availability, snow conditions and winter travel arrangements.
APRIL – MAY Spring Shoulder Season Generally moderate Some city hotels can be comparatively good value, with demand varying around public holidays. Good months to compare flexible sightseeing itineraries.

Seasonal patterns are indicative. Prices are not guaranteed to rise or fall in every location or on every travel date.

03 / BEHIND YOUR QUOTATION

Four Things That Shape Your Final Quote

Travel season matters, but these practical details can make just as much difference.

01

Hotel Availability

Your room category, preferred hotel location and how early you book can affect accommodation costs.

ACCOMMODATION
02

Travel Dates

Weekends, festivals, holiday periods and school vacations may attract more visitors than nearby dates.

CALENDAR
03

Destinations & Activities

Ski resorts, Black Sea hotels, mountain excursions and special experiences have different seasonal demand patterns.

ITINERARY
04

Group Size & Transport

The number of travellers, room-sharing preferences and vehicle requirements influence the overall package calculation.

LOGISTICS
04 / GETTING MORE VALUE

A Better Trip Isn't Always the Cheapest Departure Date.

If your dates are flexible, consider comparing April–May or September–October departures. These periods can offer a good balance of weather, sightseeing conditions and availability.

For a winter city break, quieter dates from November to March may work well. But if skiing is essential, prioritise suitable snow and resort conditions over the lowest possible package price.

01 / ENTRY PERMISSION

Check Your Visa Route Before Booking Flights.

Georgia has an official e-Visa system for eligible short-stay visitors. But not every traveller follows the same entry process.

What About Georgia's e-Visa?

Eligible visitors can submit a short-stay visa application using Georgia's official online e-Visa portal. Eligibility is checked according to nationality, passport type and other application details.

The official FAQ says an e-Visa decision takes no less than five working days. This is a minimum processing period, not a promised approval date.

The portal also lists additional application and verification steps. Review the current instructions before paying or submitting your documents.

02 / TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

YOUR GEORGIA TRAVEL QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to help you choose the right month for your Georgia holiday.

Wondering when to visit Georgia for wine harvest, mountain scenery or a ski holiday? The best answer depends on what you want to experience.

These eight frequently asked questions cover seasonal weather, popular experiences, winter travel and package planning.

01 What is the best month to visit Georgia?

September and October are among the best months for an all-round Georgia trip. The summer heat starts to ease, sightseeing becomes more comfortable and Kakheti's wine harvest adds a seasonal experience.

April and May are also good choices for spring greenery and city sightseeing, although rainfall can be more frequent. Your ideal month still depends on your travel priorities.

02 Is Georgia too hot during summer?

Summers can be hot in Georgia's lower-altitude cities. Tbilisi's average July high is around 32°C, with hotter days possible.

However, mountain destinations such as Kazbegi are generally cooler, which makes June through September a popular period for alpine scenery and outdoor travel.

03 Can I visit Georgia in winter?

Yes. Georgia can be a rewarding winter destination, especially for skiing in Gudauri and experiencing snowy Caucasus landscapes.

Tbilisi is usually quieter during the colder months, but mountain journeys require more flexibility because snowfall and avalanche risk can temporarily affect roads.

04 When is Georgia's wine harvest season?

Georgia's traditional Rtveli wine harvest typically takes place from late August through October, with September and early October often being particularly interesting in Kakheti.

Exact harvesting dates depend on grape varieties, weather and individual vineyards, so arrange harvest experiences around confirmed local dates.

05 When does the ski season start in Gudauri?

Gudauri's ski season generally begins in late December and can extend into April when snow conditions allow.

January through March is a common period for ski-focused holidays. Resort opening dates, operating lifts and snow conditions should always be confirmed for your travel year.

06 Is the road to Kazbegi safe in winter?

The Georgian Military Highway is used throughout winter, but snow, ice and avalanche danger can cause temporary restrictions, especially around the Gudauri–Kobi section.

Travel with a suitably equipped vehicle and experienced driver, check official road conditions before departing, and keep flexibility in your mountain itinerary.

Check Official Road Updates
07 What is the cheapest time to visit Georgia?

November through March can offer lower accommodation prices in some city destinations, particularly outside holidays and major events.

However, ski resort destinations such as Gudauri can be expensive during their busy winter season. The cheapest time therefore depends on your planned destinations.

08 Does my travel month affect the Georgia tour package price?

Yes, it can. Hotel demand, local transport, destination popularity and holiday periods may influence the package quotation.

Summer beach travel, winter ski holidays and shoulder-season sightseeing each have different pricing patterns. Request a quote based on your actual dates and preferred itinerary.
