At Tbilisi airport, a border officer decides, and Georgia’s Interior Ministry has said it can refuse you if your interview answers are not convincing.
Since 1 January 2026, that officer can also ask for insurance of at least GEL 30,000, with seven specific details printed on it.
Use a phone photo, and the official portal will not accept it.

Is Georgia A Good First International Trip From India?
Yes, if your paperwork is exact.
Georgia’s tourism figures show Indian arrivals rising from 124,335 in 2024 to 142,476 in 2025.
You apply online with no embassy visit.
The Embassy of Georgia in India says the e-Visa gives the same right to enter as a sticker visa.
The border officer still decides who is admitted, and that is where trips fail.
Entry Rules For Indian Passport Holders In 2026
E-Visa Or Visa-Free Entry
Georgia does not give Indian passport holders a visa on arrival.
Wego’s 2026 guide says you can enter visa-free if you hold a currently valid visa or residence permit from the US, UK, Schengen states, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, the UAE and some others.
That route allows 90 days in any 180 days, and an expired visa does not count.
Everyone else applies on the official e-Visa portal.
The fee is US$20 plus 2%, and it is not refunded if you are denied or never use the visa.
The portal says a decision takes not less than 5 working days.
Wego also reports a separate DuVerify identity check of US$15, to be completed within 24 hours.
Each traveller needs a separate application, and that includes a child listed on a parent’s passport.
The card does not need to be in the traveller’s name, so one person can pay for the family.
Only Visa and Mastercard are accepted, so a RuPay-only card will not work.
Your email must be verified within 1 hour, and payment must be made within 5 hours.
Miss either window and the application is cancelled.
Stay length is set per passport country, so read the days printed on your approved e-Visa.
Wego reports 30 days within a 120-day window for Indians.
Passport And Photo Rules That Cause Rejections
Your passport must be valid for 3 months beyond the validity period of the visa you request, not beyond your return flight.
It needs 2 free pages, no damage and an issue date within the last 10 years.
Your photo must be taken within the last 6 months, face the camera and fill 50% to 70% of the frame height.
Phone photos, vending-machine photos and photos scanned from other documents are not accepted.
Enter your middle name after your given name with a space, and a single name goes in the surname field.
Documents must be in English or Georgian.
The Insurance Rule And What Your Policy Must Show
Every tourist needs health and accident insurance of at least GEL 30,000, covering arrival day to departure day.
Visit Georgia’s explainer on the insurance rule says the policy can be Georgian or foreign, in English or Georgian, on paper or on screen.
It must show:
- the parties to the contract
- the covered territory
- the subject of insurance
- the start and end dates
- the insured risks
- the coverage limits
- the premium amount and payment terms
Check each item on your certificate before you pay for anything else.
The rule also applies to visa-free entrants.
The official e-Visa portal links two Georgian platforms, eInsurance.ge and eCover.ge, if your Indian insurer’s certificate lacks any item.
Documents The Border Officer Can Ask For
The official FAQ lists five documents:
- your passport
- a document proving the purpose of travel
- proof of accommodation
- travel and health insurance
- proof of sufficient funds
Accommodation proof means a hotel booking or rental agreement covering your entire stay.
Funds can be shown with a bank statement for the last 3 months, an employer reference stating your position and income, a property document or a dated, signed sponsor letter.
The portal names no minimum amount, so figures quoted elsewhere are not Georgian rules.
Print your e-Visa, because the portal tells you to bring a copy.

Getting To Georgia From India
Direct Flights In 2026
IndiGo began Delhi–Tbilisi flights in August 2023 and Mumbai–Tbilisi flights in August 2025.
It cancelled Tbilisi flights from 26 January 2026 and extended the cancellations to 28 March 2026, citing airspace developments around Iran.
We found no confirmed resumption, so check IndiGo’s own booking page for your dates.
What To Fix Before Booking Flights
When IndiGo launched Delhi–Tbilisi in 2023, the flight left at 20:10 and landed at 00:45 the next day.
If you land after midnight, your insurance and first hotel night must start on the landing date.
Your return date sets your stay length, so match it to the e-Visa.

The 2% Tax On Overseas Packages
The Union Budget 2026-27 cut tax collected at source (TCS) on overseas tour packages to a flat 2%, KPMG’s budget note confirms.
The seller collects it when you pay.
On a ₹2,00,000 package, that is ₹4,000.
It appears in your Form 26AS, and you claim it against your income tax in your return.
Ask for it as a separate line on your invoice.
Cards, Cash And Declaration Limits
The currency is the lari, and US dollars and euros are widely accepted and exchanged.
Canada’s Georgia travel advice warns that cards may not work in rural areas.
It also says you must declare cash or instruments above GEL 30,000, or the equivalent, to customs.
Fines and confiscation apply if you do not.
Use licensed exchange counters only.

Hospitals Ask For Payment First
Canada’s advice says medical services can be expensive and immediate cash payment is often required.
Care in rural areas is limited, and medical evacuation can be very expensive.
The GEL 30,000 minimum is a legal floor, not a plan.
Pick a policy that covers hospital stays and evacuation.
Medicines From India
Georgia strictly regulates prescription medicines and some over-the-counter ones.
Carry a prescription with an English translation, keep medicines in original containers and pack them in your cabin bag.
Declare them at customs.
Carrying prescription medication that is illegal under Georgian law can mean deportation or jail.
Areas You Must Not Enter
Do not enter Abkhazia, South Ossetia or the 5 km zone around their boundary lines.
The lines are poorly defined and change, and you can be detained even by mistake.
Canada advises a high degree of caution in Tbilisi because demonstrations are regular.

Will A Road Closure Affect My Kazbegi Day?
It can, in winter.
In a notice reported on 10 February 2026, the Roads Department closed the Gudauri–Kobi section to all vehicles for avalanche danger.
Keep a spare day in the route and ask for the closure plan in writing.
