The biggest danger in Georgia is not crime.
It is the road.
Georgia recorded 469 road deaths in 2025, its highest in six years.
That is 129 deaths per million people, against an EU average of 44.
A Tbilisi nightclub scam that targeted tourists, including Indians, ended with the club owner jailed for 8 years 6 months.
Protests in the capital have run for 650 days, and the UK warns that foreigners who join them may be questioned or refused re-entry.
This roadmap shows where Georgia’s real risks sit and what to do about each, current as of 1 October 2026.
The Short Answer For Indian Travellers In 2026
Yes, for most travellers, if you manage four specific risks.
Crime against tourists is low.
No government we checked tells visitors to avoid Georgia, apart from two occupied regions.
The risks that actually hurt people are road accidents, nightlife scams, mountain and winter conditions, and protest areas.
We found no published safety statistics specific to Indian tourists.
Treat any site that quotes an “Indian safety score” as unverified.
What Governments Rate Georgia
The UK’s FCDO updated its Georgia advice on 15 September 2026 and calls crime levels “low”.
It advises against all travel to South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
It also advises against all but essential travel to areas next to their boundary lines.
The US State Department rates Georgia Level 1, which means normal precautions.
1TV reported that the rating was maintained in March 2026.
The same advisory puts Abkhazia and South Ossetia at Level 4.
Canada’s advice says normal security precautions apply nationally.
It adds a high degree of caution for Tbilisi because demonstrations are regular.
Where The Real Risk Sits
- Roads, where deaths run at nearly three times the EU rate.
- Nightlife scams, which have produced criminal convictions.
- Winter mountain roads and winter lodgings.
- Central Tbilisi protests and the occupied-region boundaries.
Entry rules, e-Visa steps and insurance requirements are a separate topic.
Our guide to the Georgia visa for Indians covers them.
Roads: The Biggest Danger Is The Drive
What The 2025 Numbers Show
JAMnews, reporting official data in February 2026, counted 469 road deaths in 2025.
Over 2015 to 2025, the total was 5,324 deaths.
Drink-driving caused 62 deaths in 2025.
Pedestrians were 34% of all deaths.
Georgia recorded 8,191 injuries, including 1,151 children injured and 28 children killed.
43% of crashes happen in Tbilisi.
Imereti has the highest fatality rate, and Kakheti also records high death rates.
Kakheti sits on Roaming Legs’ 7-day route, so the road matters even if you never drive yourself.
Pedestrian Rules And Night Driving
Canada warns that fatal accidents are frequent and drivers do not always give pedestrians the right of way.
It advises against travelling after dark.
The FCDO describes roads outside city centres as badly lit and poor quality.
It lists stray livestock, erratic driving and poorly maintained vehicles as hazards.
Snow at higher altitudes can make travel difficult or impossible, the FCDO adds.
Cross at marked crossings only, and hold children’s hands near every road.
Ask your operator for the transfer plan on each long day, and for the latest time you will be on the road.
If You Plan To Self-Drive
The FCDO says Georgia’s drink-driving limit is lower than the UK’s and that punishments can be severe.
It also says rental companies may ask for a 1968 international driving permit.
We could not confirm Georgia’s rules for Indian driving licences.
Ask the rental company in writing which documents it needs before you pay a deposit.
Crime And Scams Aimed At Tourists
Pickpockets And Card Fraud
Canada says petty theft occurs in crowded urban areas and at public gatherings.
It also says violent crimes targeting foreigners occur occasionally.
The US OSAC report of March 2025 describes groups of street children who restrain a victim’s arms while others search pockets and bags.
OSAC says card skimming is not common but is known to occur.
Cover the keypad when you enter a PIN.
The Tbilisi Bar And Dating-App Scam
OC Media reported in December 2022 that 14 people were convicted over a Tbilisi tourist bar scam.
Women contacted tourists through social media and invited them to nightclubs.
Victims then received inflated bills and faced intimidation if they refused to pay.
Some were forced to withdraw cash from ATMs.
Victims came from Yemen, Egypt, India, Sudan and Belarus.
The club owner received 8 years 6 months.
Canada describes the same pattern, including security guards threatening tourists until they pay.
Do not follow a stranger from an app or a street invitation into a venue.
Check prices before you order, and call 112 if you are threatened.
Drink Spiking
The FCDO says drink spiking has been reported in Georgia.
Buy your own drinks and keep them in sight.
Refuse food or drinks from strangers.
Racial Harassment
The FCDO states that harassment and assault based on race do take place.
We found no published figures showing how often this affects Indian travellers.
Stay in groups at night, and use a licensed taxi or a ride-hailing app that records your driver.
Protests In Tbilisi: What They Mean For Your Trip
The FCDO notes that 9 September 2026 was the 650th consecutive day of protests.
Some have turned into violent clashes between police and protesters.
The focus is the Parliament building on Rustaveli Avenue, but protests can spread, especially on Saturday evenings and nights.
Check where you are before dusk if you plan to walk near the Parliament building.
Canada warns that even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time.
Foreigners who take part may face additional questioning on exit or be refused re-entry, the FCDO says.
Do not join a demonstration, and leave the area if a crowd forms.
Ask your hotel for its Saturday-night advice if it sits near Rustaveli Avenue.
Areas You Must Not Enter
Do not enter Abkhazia or South Ossetia.
Canada says you can be detained and arrested if you cross, even by mistake.
It says checkpoints are open only a few days a month.
It also warns of landmines near the boundaries, including near the Red Bridge, and tells visitors to avoid walking in fields and on unmarked trails.
The FCDO warns that your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against its advice.
That means a day trip across a boundary line can void your cover.
Check your own policy for the same clause, because Indian insurers’ wording differs.
Mountains And Winter: Kazbegi And Gudauri
Avalanche Closures On The Military Highway
On 10 February 2026, Georgia’s Roads Department closed the Gudauri–Kobi section (km 93 to 107) for avalanche danger.
Georgia Today reported that the Mleta–Gudauri section was open only for non-stop transit.
Kazbegi lies beyond that stretch, so a closure can cut the day trip.
Before you pay for any winter itinerary, ask for the closure plan in writing.
Ask what happens to your hotel nights and your Kazbegi day if the road shuts.
Hiking And Off-Piste Skiing
Canada says mountain trails are not always marked and weather can change rapidly.
It recommends an experienced guide from a reputable company.
The FCDO calls off-piste skiing very dangerous, and says accurate information on conditions and avalanche risk is hard to get.
It also notes that emergency response may be limited.
It cites a ski-lift malfunction at Gudauri in 2018 and a helicopter crash near Stepantsminda in 2019.
Check that your insurance covers hiking, skiing and helicopter rescue.
Many policies exclude off-piste skiing without a guide.
Carbon Monoxide In Winter Stays
On 14 December 2024, 12 people were found dead in Gudauri. Al Jazeera reported that 11 were Indian citizens and one was Georgian. Georgian police said a power generator had been switched on indoors, probably after a power cut.
- The victims were workers, not tourists.
- It is still a warning about winter power cuts and indoor heating.
- Ask your hotel in writing how it heats rooms and what it does during a power cut.
- Never run a generator, grill or fuel heater inside a room.
Safety check: for winter stays, confirm heating and power-cut arrangements before you travel.
Health, Hospitals And Medicines
Hospitals Ask For Payment First
Canada says medical services can be expensive and immediate up-front cash payment is often required.
It says rural areas face shortages of medical supplies and personnel.
It also says medical evacuation may be necessary and is very expensive.
Georgia’s mandatory insurance minimum is a legal floor, not a safety plan.
Our Georgia visa guide explains that rule.
Choose a policy that covers hospital stays, evacuation and your planned activities.
Rabies And Stray Dogs
Canada says rabies is commonly carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats.
It tells visitors to keep their distance from free-roaming dogs.
The UK’s NaTHNaC says rabies is a risk in Georgia.
It recommends pre-exposure vaccination for stays of a month or more and for high-risk activities.
JAMnews reported in 2023 that a rabid dog in Martvili bit 22 people.
It added that the last official stray-dog count was in 2015.
Wash any bite or scratch and seek treatment the same day.
Medicines And Cash
Medicines
Canada says some prescription medicines may not be available in Georgia. Carry enough for your whole trip, a copy of your prescription and the medicines in their original containers.
Cash
Declare cash or instruments above GEL 30,000 to customs. Fines and confiscation apply if you do not.
Travel rule: keep prescriptions, medicine labels and cash declarations easy to access at the border.
Extra Cautions For Families, Couples And Solo Travellers
Families should plan around the road data.
28 children were killed on Georgian roads in 2025, and 1,151 were injured.
Ask for child seats in writing, and check whether your transfer vehicle has working seat belts.
Couples should know that the FCDO says public displays of affection between same-sex couples may result in discrimination or harassment.
Solo travellers face most of the scam exposure.
The bar and dating-app scams above worked on people travelling alone.
We found no women-specific guidance in the FCDO advice.
Your Safety Planning Order, Step By Step
- Check the FCDO, US and Canadian advisories in the week you book, because the FCDO changed its political and driving information on 15 September 2026.
- Choose a route that limits long road days, and ask for the longest driving day in hours.
- For winter dates, ask for the Kazbegi closure plan in writing.
- Buy insurance that covers hospital stays, evacuation and your planned activities.
- Ask your hotels how they heat rooms and handle power cuts.
- Save 112 and your hotel's address in your phone before you land.
- Carry medicines in original packs with a prescription copy.
- Decide before arrival that you will skip protests, nightclub invitations and border-line areas.
Safety rule: sort route, insurance, hotel heating and emergency contacts before you travel.
Safety Mistakes That Cost Indian Travellers Money
- Following a stranger’s club invitation and paying an inflated bill.
- Withdrawing cash under pressure at a venue’s request.
- Crossing an administrative boundary line and voiding your insurance.
- Self-driving at night on mountain or rural roads.
- Skiing off-piste without a guide, which many policies exclude.
- Carrying cash above GEL 30,000 without a declaration.
- Carrying illegal drugs, which the FCDO says can bring 5 to 25 years in prison.
- Assuming a hospital will treat first and bill your insurer later.
