A Different Side of Georgia

Ancient Wine Culture. Beautiful Eastern Landscapes.

Kakheti is one of the most rewarding regions to explore from Tbilisi. Its vineyards, traditional family-run wineries and small historic towns offer a relaxed contrast to the capital and the Caucasus mountain route.

Georgia has an approximately 8,000-year history of winemaking. Kakheti remains central to that tradition, especially the use of qvevri — large clay vessels used for fermenting and storing wine.

This destination group is part of Roaming Legs' standard 7-day and 10-day Georgia itineraries.

Georgia's Famous Qvevri Tradition

Georgian wine culture is about much more than vineyards. One of its defining traditions is winemaking in qvevri, large clay vessels traditionally buried in the ground.

In Kakheti, visitors can explore this long-standing heritage through winery visits, local food and conversations about Georgian winemaking customs.

For travellers interested in culture, countryside scenery and regional experiences, Kakheti brings something distinctive to the route.

Western Georgia For Longer Trips

The city sits beside the Rioni River and offers a different atmosphere from the capital, with bridges, historic streets and access to the surrounding Imereti region.

Kutaisi already appears as an optional en-route stop on Roaming Legs' 10-day Full Route, particularly when travelling between Borjomi and Batumi.

Svaneti is one of Georgia's most distinctive mountain regions, known for medieval stone defensive towers, traditional villages and dramatic Caucasus scenery.

Mestia and Ushguli are among the best-known places in the region. Ushguli is often described as one of Europe's highest permanently inhabited settlements.

Getting here requires a real detour — approximately 8–9 hours by road from Tbilisi, or a seasonal, weather-dependent flight when available.

Svaneti is not included in Roaming Legs' standard packages. For private trips, it works best as a multi-day extension rather than being rushed into a shorter Georgia itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Georgia Travel Questions Answered

Planning your first Georgia trip? Find answers to common questions about where to go, how many days you need and which destinations can be added to a private itinerary.

01 What is the most-visited place in Georgia?

Tbilisi is the main starting point for Georgia trips. It's the arrival and departure point for most travellers, with Old Town, Narikala Fortress and the Bridge of Peace, plus easy access to day trips such as Mtskheta and David Gareja.

02 How many days do I need to see Georgia's main highlights?

Seven days covers the core mountains-and-wine route comfortably, including Tbilisi, Kazbegi, Gudauri and Kakheti.

Ten days adds the Black Sea coast at Batumi and the mineral-spring town of Borjomi, with flexibility for optional stops.

03 Is Svaneti worth the extra time?

Yes, if you have the extra days. Svaneti is one of Georgia's most distinctive mountain regions, known for the medieval defensive towers of Mestia and Ushguli.

Since it's around 8–9 hours from Tbilisi by road, or reached by seasonal, weather-dependent flights, it works best as a private extension rather than a rushed stop.

04 Can I add Mtskheta, David Gareja or Vardzia to my itinerary?

Yes. Roaming Legs' private Georgia bookings are customisable by route, pace and hotels.

Mtskheta works as an easy half-day trip, David Gareja as a day trip subject to access restrictions, and Vardzia as a longer day trip or overnight addition. Tell our team which places you'd like to include.

05 Do I need a separate permit or visa for any of these destinations?

You generally don't need a separate regional visa to visit destinations within Georgia, including Svaneti. However, your entry eligibility and visa requirements depend on your nationality and travel documents.

Indian travellers should check the current Georgia e-visa eligibility rules and any applicable entry exemptions before booking. Roaming Legs assists with the visa process.

Border-area access at David Gareja may be restricted, independently of visa status.

06 Which region is best for a first-time visitor?

The Tbilisi–Kazbegi– Gudauri–Kakheti route is an excellent starting point for first-time visitors.

It combines Georgia's capital, the Caucasus Mountains and traditional wine country without requiring the longer westbound drives to Batumi or Svaneti. This is the core of Roaming Legs' 7-day route.
